I am Jiru Gutema, an Ethiopian software engineer and full-stack developer based in Addis Ababa, with a bias toward the backend and distributed systems. I currently build asynchronous FastAPI microservices at Mereb Technologies while finishing a BSc in software engineering at Addis Ababa University, and in my own time I publish browser extensions, web services and developer tools on GitHub. I prefer code that the next person to read it can reason about without a meeting.

Early life and education

School and bootcamps

I was raised in Addis Ababa and educated in the Ethiopian public school system. In early 2025, I completed a Google-backed full-stack web-development bootcamp known locally as the Coding Academy (African to Silicon Valley), where I studied advanced data structures and algorithms — including graph and tree algorithms, dynamic programming, and advanced string algorithms.

Between November 2024 and January 2025, I completed an intensive at the Information Network Security Agency (INSA) Summer Program covering introduction to cybersecurity, ethical hacking and cryptography.

University

Since January 2022, I have been pursuing a Bachelor of Science in software engineering at Addis Ababa University, with expected graduation in September 2027. My coursework spans web development, mobile application development with Flutter, fundamentals of software engineering, data structures and algorithms, operating systems, computer architecture, object-oriented programming and software development.

Career

"Jiru takes initiative and suggested using React for the project. He handles project requirements carefully, delivers timely updates, and is a team player. His performance during the internship was marked by strong collaboration with peers, proficiency in the React framework, and a solid understanding of backend workflows."

Open source and community

My public GitHub account holds more than a hundred repositories, including the source for most of the projects above, a set of Go service modules (a reusable RBAC service, a key–value store and a pastebin), and my dotfiles and Neovim configuration.

  • Peon-sh/Peon — an open-source, self-hostable deployment platform. I added service suspend and resume, and fixed a command-injection vulnerability in its database backup engine.
  • aunetx/blur-my-shell — added a workspace corner-radius setting to this GNOME Shell extension, which has over 2,000 stars.
  • oliwebd/o-tiling — added workspace-indicator options and Super+number workspace shortcuts to this GNOME auto-tiling extension.
  • GibbonEdu/docs — fixed a typo in the official documentation.
  • JiruGutema/react-next_folder — added multi-argument support for creating multiple React/Next.js folders at once.
  • mpopp75/db4free-net-l10n — contributed an Afaan Oromoo translation pool to the db4free.net database host.
  • Nexus Tutorial — mentoring students in React, Next.js, backend development and data structures.
  • AWS Cloud Club at Addis Ababa University — core team member.

Views and influences

I credit educational and science programming as a continuing influence on my approach to engineering — Veritasium, StarTalk and 3Blue1Brown have been informal sources of mathematical and physical intuition. I prefer to write clean, efficient and maintainable code, and I have a continuing interest in full-stack development, machine learning and cloud computing.
